Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

Gigabyte has launched some new motherboards, including the GA-X58A-UD3R. This motherboard that can support all kind of Core i7 processors is based on the socket 1366 platform. The GA-X58A-UD3R has an ICH10R Southbridge and an X58 Northbridge chipset. This motherboard has one PCI-E 1X, four 16X PCI-E, and one PCI slot. The company claims that the first two PCI-E has 16 lanes, while the other two has 8. The great thing is that both of them can support the CrossfireX and 3-way SLI. The GA-X58A-UD3R is equipped with six DDR 3 slot with triple channel 2000 MHz that can help up to 24 GB of memory. This motherboard has 10 SATA ports, and it can support SATA2, 8 RAID capable of SATA 3Gbps ports, 2 RAID capable of SATA 6Gbps ports, and 2 RAID-capable SATA ports. There are ten USB 2.0 ports available, plus two USB 3.0 ports. This motherboard provides excellent support, and it runs almost like a file server. The PCB layout of this motherboard is also great for neat wiring.

Testing Setup

The Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R was tested using Intel Core i7 980X extreme edition 3.33MHz (133MHz X 25) and overclocked at 4.4MHz (200MHz QPI X22). A 24GB 1600MHz triple channel DDR3 memory, ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB card, 750W PSU, Seagate 7200.11 1TB SATA hard drive and Windows 7 64-bit were also used in the test.

Overclocking

This motherboard is relatively easy to overclock. The settings are mostly located on the same page in CMOS BIOS so their values can be changed easily. The board also has an automatic recovery function that can be used to reset the board without losing the settings quickly.

With the QPI of 220MHz way over the 200MHz QPI, this is the best overclock from a 1366 motherboard using a core i7 980X processor. The i7 core 980X is a 3.33GHz stock and overclocked at 4.4GHz easily with this board, having an impressive score of 2,624 for Media Benchmark and proven to be the best in a minimum frame rate of 42fps.

Conclusion

The performance of the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R is almost the same as the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7, but it has a lower price. This motherboard also shows excellent overclocking capabilities. Considering the low cost and all the features and performance, this motherboard is an excellent value for our money. If the Core i7 980X EE processor is too expensive for us, we can use the Core i7 950 instead and overclock it at 3.60GHz. The speed will defeat the original rate of the i7 980X EE.
